Konavle is the doorstep trip: family wineries around Gruda pour the local Malvasija, and the medieval Sokol Grad fortress watches over the valley from its cliff. Should you take the boat or the car into Dubrovnik?

Boat for Old Town days, car for everything else. Water taxis run from Cavtat’s harbor straight to the Old Town port in roughly 45 minutes, and you step off at the city gates with no parking to think about. That matters, because the Old Town is pedestrian-only and the nearest garage, Ilijina Glavica, fills up early in summer — our Old Town guide covers the workarounds.

Drive when you are heading anywhere beyond the walls: the Gruž morning market, the beaches on Lapad, or an early start up the coast toward Ston and the Pelješac wine road. The 19 km run into the city takes about 30 minutes along one of the prettiest coastal roads in Croatia.
