Why no car reaches the walls

Dubrovnik’s walled Old Town is a pedestrian area: its main street, Stradun, runs for about 300 m between Pile Gate in the west and Ploče Gate in the east. Around the walls, the City runs a special traffic zone every year from 1 April to 31 October, covering the streets from Ilijina glavica along Zagrebačka ulica to Viktorija and from Pile to Boninovo. It began on 2 June 2025, making Dubrovnik the first Croatian city with such a system.

Entry is checked by cameras that read number plates, and the City’s decision fines unauthorised entry at €260 for a private individual and €1,320 for a company. Outside the season, vehicles may drive round the Old Town under normal rules, unless the Mayor switches the system on for a holiday or a big event.

The drop-off points

  • Pile. The drop-off area and bus stop are about 115 m from Pile Gate, by OpenStreetMap walking routes, a two-minute walk. This is the usual point for the western half of the town and for Stradun.
  • Ploče. The bus stop on the east side is about 65 m from Ploče Gate, handy for the hotels in Ploče, east of the walls.
  • Minivans. A 7+1 or 8+1 vehicle may stop only at the designated area at Pile, in a slot booked through the City’s system for at most ten minutes, under the City’s rules for minivans. The City charges €35 per drop-off from 1 March to 30 November, and nothing in December, January and February or at night.

Walking with luggage

The Tourist Board describes the Old City as known for steep steps and stone alleys, while Stradun and many of the main sights are on flat ground. If your apartment is up a stepped lane, tell us the address when you book: we confirm the nearest stop, and you will know before you land how far you will carry the cases.

Staying near the walls, or further out

Hotels in Ploče are within walking distance of the Old Town: the Hotel Argentina bus stop is about 780 m from Ploče Gate, ten minutes on foot, and Viktorija about 1.1 km, by OpenStreetMap walking routes. From the hotels of the Lapad peninsula it is about 4.4 km by road to Pile Gate, and from Babin Kuk about 6 km, so most guests there use the bus or a car for the evening. A car with a driver can take you in and collect you again at a time you choose.

Leaving the Old Town

For a pick-up, the same points work in reverse. Give us the time and the gate, and the driver arrives at the agreed point; at other pick-ups than the airport, 15 minutes of waiting are included. The airport page and the port page cover the two most common trips out.

Questions about Old Town drop-offs

Can a car drive into Dubrovnik Old Town?

No. The walled town is a pedestrian area, and from 1 April to 31 October the streets around it are a restricted traffic zone open only to vehicles with a pass or pre-arranged access.

Where will the driver drop us?

At the nearest point the vehicle may stop, which we confirm before the day. For most bookings that is near Pile Gate, about a two-minute walk away, or on the Ploče side for hotels east of the walls.

How far is it from Pile Gate to Ploče Gate?

About 560 m along Stradun, 7 to 8 minutes on foot. Stradun itself is flat, but many side streets are stepped.

What happens if a car enters the zone without access?

Cameras read the number plate, and the City's fine for unauthorised entry is €260 for a private individual and €1,320 for a company. Our drivers stop only where the vehicle is allowed to.

Is there a fee for a minivan drop-off at Pile?

The City charges €35 for each drop-off by a 7+1 or 8+1 vehicle from 1 March to 30 November, in a booked slot of up to ten minutes. If your group travels by minivan, we tell you before the day whether the fee applies to your booking.
