In short

- Međugorje is about 128 km from the Old Town, 2¼–2½ hours of driving before the border queue; a car with a driver costs €215.
- The road crosses into Bosnia and Herzegovina near Metković: bring a passport for everyone.
- St James Church, Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain are the three places most pilgrims visit.
- Kravica waterfall or Mostar fits on the same day with an early start.

Međugorje, often written Medjugorje in English, is a village in Herzegovina that has drawn Catholic pilgrims since 1981. From Dubrovnik it makes a long but straightforward day: about 128 km each way, one border, and three places most visitors want to see. With a driver you leave when you want, stay as long as the day allows, and come back without anyone at the wheel being tired. This guide covers the road, the border papers, the shrine and the stops that fit on the same day.

## How far is Međugorje from Dubrovnik?

By the fastest road, Međugorje is about 128 km from Pile Gate, 2¼–2½ hours of driving without stops or queues. The route follows the D8 coast road north, crosses the Pelješac Bridge, turns inland through the Neretva valley and enters Bosnia and Herzegovina near Metković, then finishes on the A1 motorway and a regional road into the village.

Since the [Pelješac Bridge](https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/projects/projects-database/peljesac-bridge-improves-links-with-croatia-s-south-dalmatia-region_en) opened to traffic on 26 July 2022, the coast road north no longer has to cross the short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. The European Commission says the link cut the drive between the two ends of the D8 from at best 59 minutes to 22. So the only border on the way to Međugorje is the one near Metković, where the Neretva valley meets the frontier.

There are several crossings within a few kilometres of each other in the valley, including Metković–Doljani and Nova Sela–Bijača, and the driver picks one on the day, depending on the queues.

## The border and the papers

Croatia is in the EU and the Schengen area; Bosnia and Herzegovina is in neither. That means a passport check leaving Croatia, another entering Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the same again on the way back. Bring a passport for everyone in the car, children included.

**Entry rules.** [UK travel advice for Bosnia and Herzegovina](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/bosnia-and-herzegovina/entry-requirements) allows British visitors up to 90 days in a six-month period without a visa, with a passport under ten years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 90 days after the day you leave. All foreign nationals must register with the police within 72 hours of arrival; hotels normally do it, and on a day trip the question does not arise. Check the rules for your own nationality before you travel.

**The Entry/Exit System.** Since 10 April 2026 the [EU Entry/Exit System](https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen/smart-borders/entry-exit-system_en) has recorded every exit and entry of non-EU visitors at the Schengen border, with a facial image and fingerprints, in place of passport stamps. EU citizens are exempt. A first registration takes longer, and our [guide to EES at the Croatian borders](https://dubrovnikcarrent.com/blog/ees-croatia-border-guide/) explains what to expect.

**The lanes.** At Croatian crossings the lanes signed “EU, EGP, CH” are for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens and close family travelling with them, and everyone else uses the lanes signed “Sve putovnice”, meaning all passports, as the [Croatian police](https://policija.gov.hr/vijesti/obavijest-putnicima-o-koristenju-oznacenih-prometnih-traka-na-granicnim-prijelazima-nakon-uspostave-sustava-ees/9228) explain. A car carrying a mix of nationalities that are not close family uses the all-passports lane, and the driver chooses it before the booths.

## Međugorje and its shrine

Međugorje is a village in the municipality of Čitluk, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. Its name means “between mountains”, it lies at about 200 m above sea level, and since 1981 it has become a Catholic pilgrimage site with more than a million visitors a year, as [Wikipedia’s article on Međugorje](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medjugorje) records. The reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary began there on 24 June 1981.

In September 2024 the Holy See set out its position in a note called “The Queen of Peace”, approved by Pope Francis on 28 August 2024. It grants a nihil obstat: pilgrimages may be organised and the faithful may give the devotion their “prudent adhesion”, without any declaration that the apparitions are supernatural, according to the [Holy See Press Office](https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2024/09/19/240919i.html).

### St James Church and the outdoor altar

The parish church of St James is the centre of the shrine’s sacramental and prayer life. Building began in 1934 and the church was consecrated on 19 January 1969, according to the [parish’s guide to the shrine](https://archive.medjugorje.hr/en/medjugorje-phenomenon/guide/). Behind it, the outdoor altar built in 1989 has a prayer area with about 5,000 seats, used for the largest gatherings, and a bronze statue of the Risen Christ was put up nearby for Easter 1998.

### Apparition Hill

Apparition Hill, known locally as Podbrdo, is the hillside above the hamlet of Bijakovići where the first apparitions were reported. A statue of the Queen of Peace marks the spot, and the Blue Cross at the foot of the hill dates from 1985. The driver can set you down near the start of the path and collect you when you come down.

### Cross Mountain

Cross Mountain, or Križevac, rises to 520 m above the village. The parishioners built the concrete cross at the top on 15 March 1934, and the climb has become the shrine’s Way of the Cross. Allow time for it, and wear shoes with a good grip.

## Distances at a glance

| From the Old Town to | By road | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kravica waterfall | About 122 km | On the Trebižat river, about 10 km south of Ljubuški |
| Međugorje | About 128 km | 2¼–2½ hours of driving, plus the border |
| Mostar, Stari Most | About 146 km | 2½–2¾ hours of driving, plus the border |

All distances are by the fastest road from Pile Gate, without stops or queues, from OpenStreetMap routing.

## Kravica or Mostar on the same day

**Kravica waterfall** is on the Trebižat river, about 10 km south of Ljubuški and 40 km south of Mostar, with falls about 25 m high, as [Wikipedia’s article on Kravica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kravica_%28waterfall%29) describes. It is about 122 km from the Old Town, a short detour from the road to Međugorje, and makes a natural second stop on a summer day. Carry some cash for the entrance.

**Mostar** and its Old Bridge are about 146 km from the Old Town. Seeing Međugorje and Mostar in one day is possible with an early start, but it makes a day of ten hours or more. Our [Mostar day trip guide](https://dubrovnikcarrent.com/blog/mostar-day-trip-with-driver/) covers the city and the bridge.

## A day plan with a driver

1. Leave Dubrovnik at about 07:00, so the car reaches the border before the mid-morning queues.
2. Arrive in Međugorje by about 10:00: St James Church first, then Apparition Hill.
3. Lunch in the village while the driver waits; climb Cross Mountain if you have the time and the legs.
4. Add Kravica in the afternoon, or head straight back.
5. Cross back into Croatia and drive down the coast, with a stop in Ston for dinner if the day allows.

The whole day runs to nine or ten hours. In July and August, start earlier still and carry water and a hat for the hills.

## Coming back into Croatia

Re-entering Croatia means re-entering the EU. Meat and dairy products bought in Bosnia and Herzegovina may not be brought in at all, according to the EU’s [Your Europe guidance on food](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/meat-dairy-animal/index_en.htm), and under the [EU’s duty-free allowances](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/alcohol-tobacco-cash/index_en.htm) each traveller arriving by land may bring 40 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits, 4 litres of still wine, 16 litres of beer and €300 of other goods.

## What it costs

As a one-way route, Dubrovnik to Međugorje costs €215 by car for up to four passengers, €270 by minivan for up to eight, and €310 in a business saloon, per vehicle, with fuel, tolls and VAT included. For a return in a day with stops, hire the car and driver by the hour instead, at €50 an hour by car or €360 for a full day of 8 hours; send us the plan and we reply with the price.

The [Bosnia and Herzegovina section](https://dubrovnikcarrent.com/#mostar-bosnia) lists every route over that border, and our [guide to day trips from Dubrovnik](https://dubrovnikcarrent.com/blog/day-trips-from-dubrovnik-by-car/) compares Međugorje with nine other days out.
